An itchy trigger finger yesterday had me driving down to San Pedro to check out the Korean Friendship Bell in Angel’s Gate Park. Nice joint. Took a lot of patience, however as the place is popular amongst tourists and locals alike. A lot of hurry up and wait for a break in the visitors but it was fun...

Blue Angels #5 and #6 cross at show center while performing a four-point hesitation roll.
I learned while researching the Blue Angels’ routine that they actually fly at such altitude to give the perception that they are passing at the same level when calculated against the viewing angle of the audience on the ground.

Slow shutter speed + long lens + fast aircraft. Man, that’s a tough one. Airshows are a constant yin/yang of desires, especially when prop planes abound.

I spent the day at the 2010 MCAS Miramar air show near San Diego yesterday in what has become an annual photo tradition. 2300 frames and one nasty farmer’s tan later and I’m sorting and editing. The thing about airshows is that, while certainly skills are important to catch an interesting moment, there is a certain amount of luck that is left up to weather, mechanics, location and...

In the last couple of days both Nikon and Canon have introduced amazing new DSLR camera bodies. In both cases these new “prosumer” bodies exceed some of the capabilities of even their own high-end “pro” products, leaving the huddled masses both drooling and cursing the “obsolescence” of their current equipment all over the enterweb. I, for one, have seen my...

We all know this story by now. 33 miners trapped in a copper mine in Chile – alive and waiting for rescue as the drills make slow progress to their underground chamber. Terrifying to think about.
One of the most amazing places you can go on the internet for moving, poignant, emotional and informative photojournalism is The Boston Globe’s Big Picture, a high resolution presentation of...
